Would you agree “Best Tennis Player” should be separated in two era?
pre-graphite racket and post graphite racket?
i grew up and learn tennis with wooden racket, then the metal (steel and aluminum) racket came along, but the game didn’t really change until the graphite rackets showed up.
Graphite really change the face of tennis in my opinion. the shots we learned, the point construction taught during the wooden racket era no longer apply (or a lot less effective). the graphite technology also shape the new breed of tennis player; the game become more physical demanding; player grow bigger, stronger and taller comparing to the wooden era players.
therefore, i really believe when argue who’s the “Best Ever” i think it only make sense to make it pre and post graphite technology.
pre-graphite i would say Rod Laver without a doubt, post-graphite still arguable at this point between Pete and Federer…

At a subconscious level, I think people already do that – separate the game into eras.
Pre-graphite: I think that would include Borg right? Personally I would give Borg the edge over Laver. With the same technology, Borg had that physical element that Laver did not have. But already as you can see, even if you separate the eras, you still have uncertainties regarding hypothetical match ups. Do you think Rod would have won the French Open if Borg was around?
Post-graphite: Most people would narrow it down to Fed vs Pete. And in addition to the racket technology, you also have to consider the different surfaces. Pete played in faster grass and hard courts than Roger. Personally I think that would make the difference regarding who would dominate the hypothetical rivalry.
